Adjust a Household Replenishment Subscription

Design a recurring order experience that predicts supply needs while making quantity, frequency, skips, and price changes easy to control.

Mobile, Responsive web2 to 4 hours

The brief

Understand the problem

Background

Household items run out at different rates. A fixed monthly box can create waste, while hidden cutoff dates and price changes make subscriptions frustrating.

User context

Eli receives coffee, detergent, and pet food on different schedules. He has extra detergent this month but cannot delay the pet food.

Product problem

Customers need item-level control without losing sight of the next combined order, shipping threshold, and total charge.

Objective

Create a subscription dashboard and upcoming-order editor for products with different replenishment rhythms.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Subscription overview grouped by next shipment
  • Item-level quantity and frequency controls
  • Upcoming order review with cutoff
  • Price or stock change resolution

Screens and states

  • Subscription home
  • Upcoming order
  • Item schedule
  • Change review
  • Stock exception

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Eli opens the next shipment and checks its cutoff date

  2. 02

He skips detergent and increases pet food quantity

  3. 03

The total falls below free shipping and alternatives are shown

  4. 04

He reviews the updated dates and charge

  5. 05

One coffee item goes out of stock before fulfillment

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Allow per-item skip, quantity, date, and frequency changes
  • Show how edits affect shipping and the total
  • Require acknowledgment for meaningful price increases
  • Keep the order cutoff visible during editing
  • Offer replacement, delay, or removal for unavailable items

Constraints

  • Different items have different fulfillment lead times
  • Inventory can change after the cutoff
  • Some discounts depend on shipment frequency

Reality check

States worth considering

Every item in a shipment is skipped
A payment method expires
The new delivery date conflicts with an address hold
A substitute has a different quantity or allergen profile

Finish line

What to deliver

  • Design five responsive screens for multi-item subscription control and an inventory exception.

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
