Multi-Organization Workspace Switcher
Design a workspace switcher that makes organization, role, environment, and unsaved work clear before context changes.
The brief
Understand the problem
Background
Consultants and enterprise operators may belong to many organizations with different branding and permissions. A subtle context label can lead to editing or exporting data from the wrong tenant.
User context
Nico supports three retail clients and an internal demo workspace. He is editing a customer configuration when an alert link opens a different client's organization in another tab.
Product problem
The product must make active context unmistakable, preserve navigation intent, and stop risky cross-organization mistakes without slowing frequent switching.
Objective
Create organization discovery, context preview, protected switching, and cross-link handling for a multi-tenant product.
What to design
Define the experience
Required experience
- Identify the current organization and role
- Search permitted organizations
- Review unsaved work or risky destination context
- Switch and verify the resulting workspace
Screens and states
- Current workspace navigation
- Organization switcher
- Unsaved-work review
- Cross-organization link warning
Core user flow
Follow the critical path
- 01
Nico notices the current client identity in the global header
- 02
He searches for another client and previews his role there
- 03
The switcher warns about an unsaved configuration
- 04
He saves, switches, and opens the alert in the intended organization
Product rules
Requirements and constraints
Requirements
- Keep organization identity visible beyond color alone
- Show role, environment, and recent access in search results
- Preserve or explicitly discard unsaved work before switching
- Validate organization context for deep links and browser tabs
Constraints
- Search can reveal only organizations the user may know exist
- Brand colors cannot replace readable names
- Session context must remain isolated between organizations
Reality check
States worth considering
Finish line
What to deliver
- Four responsive screens demonstrating safe context switching

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
