The brief

Understand the problem

Background

Late-night searches often return venues with stale hours, closed kitchens, private events, or entry restrictions. A simple open label does not answer whether a place is still practical to visit.

User context

Eli finishes a concert at 11:20 p.m. and wants a casual place nearby where four friends can still order food and talk without a reservation.

Product problem

People need a quick answer, but opening hours, kitchen hours, last entry, distance, and current capacity all affect whether a venue is useful.

Objective

Design a fast open-now search and venue detail flow for an immediate group decision.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Search around the current location
  • Filter by venue type, travel time, kitchen status, and group needs
  • Inspect why a venue is considered open
  • Share a shortlist with friends

Screens and states

  • Open-now results
  • Map and list view
  • Venue detail
  • Shared shortlist

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Eli searches for food within a fifteen-minute walk

  2. 02

He filters for venues serving food after midnight

  3. 03

He checks last-order time and current capacity

  4. 04

He shares two options with the group

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Distinguish venue hours from kitchen hours and last entry
  • Show when hours were last confirmed
  • Support list and map browsing without losing filters
  • Make closing-soon status prominent

Constraints

  • Capacity information may be estimated
  • Some venues change hours for private events
  • The main decision should take less than two minutes

Reality check

States worth considering

No suitable venue is open
Location access is unavailable
A venue closes while it is saved
The group includes an underage guest

Finish line

What to deliver

  • Three to five mobile screens focused on rapid discovery and venue confidence

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
