Shared Goal With Private Progress
Design a goal tracker that lets people support a shared ambition while choosing which progress details remain private.
The brief
Understand the problem
Background
Social accountability can help with long-term goals, but public streaks and detailed activity feeds may create shame or reveal personal circumstances. Different goals also need different measures of progress.
User context
Ken and three friends are preparing for a charity hike. They want to coordinate weekly practice and encourage one another, but Ken does not want to share health measurements.
Product problem
The product must make shared commitments useful without requiring identical milestones or turning missed weeks into public failure.
Objective
Design goal setup, selective sharing, group check-ins, and recovery after a missed milestone.
What to design
Define the experience
Required experience
- Personal goal and privacy setup
- Shared group plan
- Progress check-in
- Supportive recovery
Screens and states
- Goal setup
- Group overview
- Check-in composer
- Progress history
Core user flow
Follow the critical path
- 01
Ken creates a hiking goal and private training plan
- 02
He joins the group challenge
- 03
He shares a weekly completion update without health data
- 04
After missing a week, he adjusts his next milestone
Product rules
Requirements and constraints
Requirements
- Separate private measures from shared updates
- Support different personal milestones within one group goal
- Allow encouragement without competitive ranking
- Make plans editable with change history
Constraints
- The app cannot evaluate medical fitness
- Users may pause participation
- Group members can choose different visibility levels
Reality check
States worth considering
Ready-to-use content
Mock data
Use this content to test hierarchy and realistic data states. You can expand it when the concept needs more depth.
Group plan
- Goal: complete the Lake Ridge charity hike
- This week: two practice sessions
- Ken shared: plan completed
- Mila shared: one session, adjusting next week
Finish line
What to deliver
- Four responsive screens
- A privacy control for each progress field
