The brief

Understand the problem

Background

A location pin is not enough when a restroom is locked, inside a paid venue, upstairs, closed after business hours, or missing required accessibility features.

User context

Sam uses a wheelchair and is visiting an unfamiliar neighborhood. They need a step-free restroom with grab rails within ten minutes and want recent confirmation that it is open.

Product problem

Facility data is often incomplete and community reports become stale, yet people may need an answer urgently.

Objective

Create the nearby search, facility detail, routing, and community update experience.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Search from current or entered location
  • Filter by accessibility and facility needs
  • Review access instructions and data freshness
  • Navigate to the facility and report a change

Screens and states

  • Map and list results
  • Filter controls
  • Restroom detail
  • Walking route
  • Report an update

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Sam searches nearby and applies step-free and grab-rail filters

  2. 02

They compare distance and latest verification time

  3. 03

They choose a library restroom and review entrance instructions

  4. 04

After arriving, they confirm the information is still accurate

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Make accessibility attributes independently filterable
  • Show whether access requires payment, a key, or staff assistance
  • Display source and recency for important claims
  • Support quick community corrections

Constraints

  • Precise indoor placement may be unavailable
  • Community reports require moderation
  • The app should remain useful without location permission

Reality check

States worth considering

No matching restroom is nearby
A facility is reported closed
Map data cannot find a step-free route
Two reports conflict

Finish line

What to deliver

  • Four to six mobile screens with a complete search and one unavailable-result state

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
