Ride Pickup at a Crowded Venue
Design a pickup coordination flow that helps riders and drivers meet safely when roads, crowds, signals, and venue rules keep changing.
The brief
Understand the problem
Background
After a concert or stadium event, precise map pins are unreliable, roads close, cellular networks slow, and hundreds of similar vehicles arrive. Pickup zones must coordinate two people without exposing more location than necessary.
User context
Jon and his mother are leaving a sold-out arena. She cannot walk far, their driver is approaching from a closed road, and Jon's phone battery is at 6 percent.
Product problem
The pair need an accessible meeting point and shared landmarks while the driver needs legal routing and clear confirmation of the correct riders.
Objective
Create pickup-zone selection, approach coordination, identity confirmation, and fallback states for a crowded venue.
What to design
Define the experience
Required experience
- Choose a suitable pickup zone using access and walk information
- Track the driver's approach with route uncertainty
- Exchange low-bandwidth landmark and arrival signals
- Confirm the correct vehicle and begin the ride
Screens and states
- Pickup zone selection
- Driver approach
- Meeting coordination
- Vehicle confirmation and fallback
Core user flow
Follow the critical path
- 01
Jon selects the accessible north pickup zone and shares that his mother uses a cane
- 02
The driver's route changes after a road closure
- 03
Both receive the same landmark and short pickup code
- 04
Jon confirms the plate and code before entering the vehicle
Product rules
Requirements and constraints
Requirements
- Show walking distance, terrain, crowd level, and accessibility for zones
- Use venue landmarks in addition to map pins
- Communicate route changes to rider and driver consistently
- Provide vehicle, driver, and pickup-code confirmation
- Offer a low-battery and low-connectivity fallback
Constraints
- Precise rider location should be shared only during the active pickup window
- Drivers cannot be directed into closed or unsafe stopping areas
- Crowd and arrival estimates may be delayed
Reality check
States worth considering
Finish line
What to deliver
- Four mobile screens showing a road-closure recovery
- A low-connectivity pickup card with essential offline details
