Consent-Based Remote Camera Preview

Design a temporary camera-sharing session that lets the person being photographed preview and approve a shot from their own phone.

Mobile2 to 4 hours

The brief

Understand the problem

Background

When one person takes a photo on another person's phone, the subject cannot easily check framing or timing. Remote preview can help, but camera access is highly sensitive and must never be ambiguous or persistent.

User context

Amina asks her friend to photograph her at an event. She wants to preview the composition and trigger a short countdown without giving either device access beyond this photo session.

Product problem

Both participants need a clear, revocable understanding of who can view, control, capture, and retain camera content at every moment.

Objective

Design the invitation, live preview, capture, review, and session-ending flow for two consenting participants.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Invite a nearby person to a time-limited session
  • Review and grant specific camera permissions
  • Preview framing with a persistent live-session indicator
  • Capture, approve, retake, and end the session

Screens and states

  • Session invitation
  • Permission review
  • Live preview and controls
  • Photo review
  • Session ended

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Amina creates a session and shows her friend a pairing code

  2. 02

Both devices confirm their roles and permissions

  3. 03

Amina checks framing and starts a countdown

  4. 04

They review the image and explicitly end access

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Require affirmative consent on both devices
  • Show a persistent indicator while camera data is shared
  • Make revoking access possible in one action
  • Explain where approved and rejected images are stored

Constraints

  • A session expires after a short period of inactivity
  • Only one device can trigger capture at a time
  • The feature must not support background or hidden camera access

Reality check

States worth considering

One participant revokes permission during preview
The connection drops during capture
The wrong device joins with an expired code
Storage is full on the camera device

Finish line

What to deliver

  • A six-state mobile flow for both participant roles
  • A permissions model showing how access starts, changes, and ends

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
