First Day City Explorer

Design a city discovery plan that fits a traveler's interests, available hours, location, and practical access needs.

Mobile2 to 4 hours

The brief

Understand the problem

Background

Travel lists often recommend the same famous places without considering opening hours, travel time, weather, mobility, or why a place suits this particular visit.

User context

Siti arrives in a new city at 14:00 and has one free afternoon. She likes contemporary art and local food, avoids long outdoor walks in heavy rain, and needs to return near her hotel by 20:00.

Product problem

The experience must turn broad preferences into a feasible plan and make assumptions easy to change when conditions shift.

Objective

Create preference setup, recommendation reasoning, itinerary building, and live adjustment for a short city visit.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Trip context and interest setup
  • Explained place recommendations
  • Time-aware itinerary
  • In-trip replanning

Screens and states

  • Discovery setup
  • Recommendation results
  • Itinerary timeline
  • Place detail

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Siti enters her time window and hotel area

  2. 02

She selects art, local food, and low walking exposure

  3. 03

    She reviews a three-stop plan

  4. 04

A closure causes one stop to be replaced without disrupting dinner

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Account for travel and dwell time
  • Show why each suggestion fits
  • Surface opening hours and booking needs
  • Allow lock, remove, and replace actions per stop

Constraints

  • Venue data may be outdated
  • Weather can change quickly
  • The plan must not assume constant connectivity

Reality check

States worth considering

A venue closes early
The traveler starts late
No booking slots remain
Two recommendations are far apart

Ready-to-use content

Mock data

Use this content to test hierarchy and realistic data states. You can expand it when the concept needs more depth.

Afternoon plan

  • 15:00 Riverfront Art Hall, 75 minutes
  • 16:35 sheltered tram to Old Market
  • 17:00 Nyonya tasting counter, booking confirmed
  • 19:10 return to hotel district

Finish line

What to deliver

  • Four mobile screens
  • An itinerary card that shows time cost and recommendation reason

If you want more

Optional extensions

Add group preference negotiation
Create a downloadable offline plan

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
