Wellbeing Support Handoff

Design a mental wellbeing check-in that offers everyday support and a respectful handoff to local crisis resources when needed.

Mobile, Responsive web

The brief

Understand the problem

Background

People may open a wellbeing service for stress, loneliness, or coping exercises, but some disclosures indicate immediate danger. The interface needs a calm transition to qualified help without presenting the product as emergency care.

User context

Morgan starts a private evening check-in after several difficult days. Their responses suggest possible immediate self-harm risk, and they are unsure whether calling is safe in their current setting.

Product problem

The service must preserve dignity and choice while making urgent support direct, local, accessible, and difficult to miss.

Objective

Create routine check-in, elevated-risk response, crisis-resource choice, and warm-handoff confirmation states.

What to design

Define the experience

Required experience

  • Complete a brief private wellbeing check-in
  • Receive a proportionate support response
  • Choose call, text, chat, trusted person, or emergency help
  • Confirm connection or return to immediate safety options

Screens and states

  • Private check-in
  • Elevated-risk response
  • Crisis resource chooser
  • Connection confirmation

Core user flow

Follow the critical path

  1. 01

Morgan answers the check-in without creating a public profile

  2. 02

A response triggers a direct safety question and clear explanation

  3. 03

They choose a local crisis text service because speaking is unsafe

  4. 04

The service confirms the handoff and keeps emergency options available

Product rules

Requirements and constraints

Requirements

  • Use clinically reviewed language that avoids blame and false reassurance
  • Localize crisis resources by region, language, age, and communication mode
  • Explain what information will be shared before a handoff
  • Provide an always-visible route to emergency services where appropriate

Constraints

  • The product cannot promise confidentiality beyond each resource's policy
  • Risk handling must not depend on a single score
  • Routine exercises cannot delay urgent support

Reality check

States worth considering

The user's region is unknown
A crisis service is unavailable
The user cannot speak or type safely
The handoff connection drops

Finish line

What to deliver

  • Four mobile-first screens plus content notes for unavailable-resource recovery

If you want more

Optional extensions

Add a trusted-contact handoff that reveals the prepared message before sending

Optional direction

Visual resources

Use these as a starting constraint if you want one. They are not part of the required solution.
